Top Tips for packing the essentials for a day out with the kids

This week’s guest post comes courtesy of Arriva as part of their Days Out campaign.  Any mum will know that sometimes just getting ready to go out for a day can be a military operation.  Well in an effort to make things a little easier the team at Arriva have come up with some great tips for packing the essentials for a day out with the kids.  Help is at hand – you can now breathe and relax.  Don’t set yourself up for failure this summer!

Taking the kids travelling doesn’t need to be a chore, so to give you some added help we’ve prepared a checklist of the essentials items that will come in handy for the “family day out” travel bag:

  • Paper pads and crayons – perfect for getting the kids sat down on the bus, in the park or having lunch. Have them draw out everything from the day for a scrap book
  • Books (including puzzle books) – another easy way to pass time and keep the kids engaged. Depending on their age, either read with them or let them get on with it themselves
  • Small toys – the smallest of toys can entertain for hours – especially if they are surprise presents that can be rewarded for good behaviour when travelling!
  • Travel games – Connect 4, draughts, Mastermind, etc. all do the job when travelling and work just as well when you arrive at your destination. Compact, cheap and quick.
  • Puppet – more for those with very young children, a hand puppet fits nicely into your bag and can placate little ones for hours – if brutally tease your older children!
  • Play dough – fantastic alternative to toys and is a brilliant option for buses, trains and planes.
  • First aid items – plasters, hay fever tablets, Sun cream, anti-bacterial wipes, bandages, instant ice packs – you don’t need to pack a full on first aid kit, just the essentials!
  • Sporting items – skipping ropes, balls, Frisbees – any small or minor items that you can squash into a bag are perfect distractions for any outdoor trips to the park.
