Family Travel Insurance

family travel insurance

What on earth is happening with the weather today after getting seriously drenched on the school run this morning I now read we are in for the worst winter in 100 years…. great eh! The joys of living in Britain and battling with our ever changing and petulant weather systems.  Thankfully though this winter I will not have to worry about finding my scarf and hat and a warm coat as I will be sunning myself on the sun drenched beaches of sunny California as Miss Roo and I are jetting off to LA on Boxing day to visit family.

To say we are excited about the trip is a small understatement, I love travelling and ever since Roo was little she’s been on planes and copes amicably with long haul journeys – we’ve always turned them into an adventure with lots of games and making her feel included by giving her little bits of independence such as her own suitcase and letting her choose her activities when we travel.  One thing though that I always make sure I’ve taken care of is family travel insurance from Debenhams, as trust me I’ve had lost luggage on holidays and not being prepared and covered is an absolute nightmare.

When we lost our suitcases on a Caribbean cruise a few years it was only thanks to the excellent travel insurance we had that we were able to go straight to the shopping mall and replace all our luggage and it’s contents the very same day.  Without this we’d have spent 7 of our 9 days on the cruise dressed only in the clothes we left the UK in or comedy holiday t-shirts so taking the time to find the right policy with a good level of cover is definitely something that as a family you need to consider and research carefully before you travel.

Top tips I’ve remembered from my yeas of travelling are:

  • look for a UK claims hotline that is open 24 hours, you never know when you might need it
  • look for a policy where you can set your excess so that if you need to make a claim you don’t get penalised
  • look for a policy where kids are insured free of charge – that’s one of the reasons why I love the Debenhams policy as this covers 3 under 18’s for every insured adult.
  • make sure you pick a policy where pre-existing conditions are covered and that you disclose these – you don’t wan’t any nasty surprises!

So if you are one of the thousands of travellers who are thinking of jetting off to sunnier climes this year and avoiding the horrendous winter weather make sure you are protected and with single trip cover from just £5 it’s never been more affordable to protect your family abroad.
